Hi, I`m Abraham Otieno

My name is Abraham Otieno. I am fifteen years old. I have just done my final grade eight examinations referred to as (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education). My favorite subjects were Mathematics and Science. I like drawing and reading story books when am with my friends.I like to eat ugali (made from maize flour) and vegetables. My favorite color is blue it represents my limit which is the sky. I would like to become a medical professor as it would help me in helping the many members of our families who have lost their lives due to poor medication and lack of funds to pay hospital bills. I would like to treat children who are financially challenged. When I do this I will ensure the growth of the future leaders of Kenya and the world.

I like Kibera Children Education because everyone is accepted regardless of your social background and their is no fee charged for one to access the services within the Library which include books for one to read, games such as play station and intern ate where we get more games and meet our friends in the social media . At the center their is also a garden where we plant flowers which make our compound attractive and beautiful.

In a nutshell I love Kibera children and continue doing the good work for the kibera children.

Words from Dominic our teacher at the center

I happen to be reading one of Martin Luther kings book and I came across an extract that inspired me to appreciate all what I do for kibera children. The extract was,
[separator]
” Life’s most persistent and urgent question is , What are you doing for others ? “
[separator]
Kibera children education has enabled me  answer this question with ease as we provide education and ensure that children’s hope to acquire basic education in a difficult environment like Kibera is made possible.

Brian Jumbas word about the schoolstrike

Brian Jumba is one of the class eight candidates who frequent the Library for studies during this period of the teachers strike. He had this to say about the strike and its effects to the children more those who live in the slums of kibera.
[separator]
I want to hail Kibera children education for having opened doors to education of kibera children through sponsorship and opening a library that has remained the only hope to kids when all the institutions of learning are closed due to teachers strike.Actually ,the teachers strike has been the main hindrance to our education in the past few weeks.
[separator]
Both the Kenya certificate of primary education and the Kenya certificate of secondary education candidates are the one’s who have been greatly affected by  this strike. Most of them have been forced to stay at home and study for themselves. Most of them have not covered the syllabus and they do have the teachers to teach them, guide or explain to them  what they are supposed to do.The classes have been left empty without pupils or teachers. Some of them who are at home may be influenced by their peers and join bad company. Some of them may indulge in drugs and crime. Most of their parents are off to work everyday and they lack people to look after them, guide or counsel them. With the National exams around the corner,I hope that a solution will be found in order to end the teachers strike.

Outbreak of cholera.

There is an outbreak of cholera in Kibera and other parts of the country. The disease has so far claimed 7 lives in the entire kibera.

[separator]

The disease is majorly caused by contaminated water putting kibera slums at risk due to lack of piped water and treated water by the Government. The symptoms include severe diarrhea, severe dehydration, nausea and vomiting. So far several food and water vending kiosks have been shut down by the Government due to poor hygienic conditions.

At the center we have put up good hygienic measures to ensure that no one is affected. We would like to thank the Swedish board for making piped and treated water available at the center.

Little things.

It is the little things that citizans do that makes the difference.  My little thing that I do is to ensure kids to enjoy every moment of their lives. /Dominic teatcher at the center

Thanks by Dominic

I thank KCE and all those involved for having chosen to work with children instead of the many issues that bedevil the Kibera society like poverty, insecurity, corruption and diseases.

It is always said that children are our future leaders. If they  are well educated we shall have a very admirable society in the future because they will carry with them the education given to the future.Once children are given good education poverty will be greatly reduced ,insecurity will be forgotten because no one will be interested in stealing a neighbors property since he or she can afford the same .Diseases will also be well managed because children will be taught merits of proper dieting, physical exercises and cleanliness.
 [separator]
It is our responsibility as adults to be good role models and provide for the needs of these children in education. If all are committed in children’s education it will help in changing the world.

Kids love their school because…

Most Kibera roads are normally full of kids dressed in various school uniforms every early morning be it on a cold,misty or rainy morning.The interest these kids have in school made me ask them why they love school.Most of them said that they love school because of the following reasons ;
 [separator]
1. They learn different subjects that would help them later in pursuing different careers.
2. They learn self etiquette and discipline.
3. They play different games which are not possible to play in Kibera because of lack of play grounds brought about by congestion of the residential houses.
4. They learn to socialise because at school they meet different people including teachers and pupils who are not members of their families.
5. They acquire the English language that enables them to communicate to their sponsors who do not understand their local and swahili languages.
6.They enjoy peace while at school, peace never exists in their homes due to domestic, political and social violence.
7.They are able to fight poverty when they get jobs after schooling.

Career by Asha Mohammed

Kibera as a community has great influence on the career a child born and bread in kibera undertakes in life .ASHA MOHAMMED had this to say :
 [separator]
My name is Asha Mohammed.I am 13 years old and in class eight.I am one of the best debaters in our school. When I grow I would like to be a lawyer. I have chosen Law as a profession so that I can help children in kibera.I would like to be children’s lawyer in order to help kibera children who go through a number of vices such as rape, child labor and child torture by parents and teachers through caning at homes and in schools respectively.
 [separator]
Apart from legally protecting children I would also like to sponsor vulnerable children to school by buying them clothing, food and paying for their school fees.I will also urge them to work hard in school and take good careers after school.I will also work hard and ensure that those children addicted to drugs and substances stop doing so and live productive lives.

The strike is called off.

All Kenyan teachers called off their ten day strike and are expected to work on Monday the 19th Jan 2015. This was after an industrial court ruled that teachers go back to work as talks between the teachers employer and the teachers union proceed. The court accepted to arbitrate between the teachers employer and the unions.
 [separator]
This ruling was a relief to most of Kenyan children who had been at home from the time teachers unions declared their strike that began on 5th Jan 2015.

Teachers strike

This years education calendar has began with much hopelessness after Kenya’s National Union Teachers (KNUT) declared a national work boycott for teachers who are its members. The schools have remained closed from 5th January,2015  the day the schools were set to be opened after the very long holidays that began for the kids on 14th November,2014.It is indefinite as to when teachers would resume work. The teachers insist that the Government has to increase their basic pay before they resume work. The Government though has stood its ground stating that they have no money.
 [separator]
During such confrontations between our Government and the teachers it’s the children who suffer most.I thank our organization for having come up with a noble idea for establishing a library that helps in serving the kids during such calamities as strike.Since the beginning of the strike our library has always been full of kids who miss their books and teachers. We have always been their for kids since the strike began.
